How to save money when moving house

Be ruthless and declutter your house! There’s no point in taking things with you that you haven’t used or looked at in months. Consider it as an opportunity to have a good sort out so you can be ready to make a fresh start in your new home – plus the fewer possessions you have the cheaper and easier it should be to move.
If you find you have a collection of things you don’t want to keep but that are still in good condition, try and sell them on and put the money you make towards the removals fees.
Boxes
Start collecting boxes as early on as possible from local supermarkets, your workplace etc. Plastic boxes can help in the removals process but can also be used for storage boxes in your new house, as they can either be stacked up or stored in corners or underneath beds.
Rubbish Bags
For those lighter items, such as clothes, cushions and bed linen, try using bin bags but be careful not to load them with too many items, as the heavier they are, the more likely they are to rip or tear.
Packing materials
Bubble wrap is the most obvious type of packing material people think to use but this can sometimes be rather expensive to buy. Try using scarves or towels in between the gaps to protect your delicate and breakable items.
Removals Van
Consider whether it would be beneficial to rent a large van to transfer everything in one or two trips, or pay less money for a smaller sized van but have to do more trips to move everything over. Doing more journeys will end up costing you more money in fuel, so think about the number of goods to be moved before making your decision.
Cleaning
If you’re moving out of rented accommodation, make sure you leave it in tip-top condition so you can guarantee you get your deposit back. This will entail carrying out a thorough clean of the entire property, including defrosting the freezer, cleaning the oven etc.
